naturalist
/ˈnaCH(ə)rələst/ noun A person who studies the natural world. Naturalists spend a lot of time in nature where they observe plants, animals, rocks, bodies of water, and the relationship between each. Naturalists then learn all they can about what they've observed and share their observations and knowledge with others. Some naturalists volunteer or work for parks, nature preserves, or schools where they share their knowledge with others. Many naturalists report their observations to scientific data collection programs and discuss the findings with biologists and other scientists. Most, if not all naturalists, use photography to record their observations while out in nature. Some are gifted artists who sketch or draw their observations. Others record sounds of animals to identify and study. Regardless of what medium naturalists use to record their observations or how they share them with others, the hope is to develop a strong sense of appreciation for the natural world and to encourage others to become involved in helping to protect our natural wonders. |
